I just heard that Gary passed away. My deepest condolences to the entire family. He was an amazing man who made our trip down Route 66 the best trip ever. His sage advice and genuine smile stayed with us through our trip all the way to the Grand Canyon! My wife still looks at me to this day when we are lost and recites the words Gary taught us!! “Baby, I love being lost with you!”
My heart is heavy, but I am very thankful to have met him that November day two years ago.
RIP sweet Mr Gary. Thanks for the memories!

We were a group of friends of 4 from Barcelona and we met Gary in late August 2014. We will never forget his warm welcome and the 2 hours we spent chatting with him (in my view, the best 2 hours of my life) and… we just found out that he already died. If the world had more people as Gary, it would a better place to live in. Today is a very sad day,… R.I.P. Gary. We will remember him in our prayers and in our hearts.

October 2014 we stoped to see Gary at his famous garage, what a treasure trove of information and belongings he has. Bought one of the books and Gary signed it for us and gave us information on where to go and stop along the way. Gary told my husband that I could stay with him, I smelt lovely, my husbands answer, “well you can have her” consequently why I am back home in Perth Western Australia. Love the old sheds and the hidden treasures.

Gary my brother Mark and I visited with you in Nov 2013. We had a wonderful conversation( i’m a police officer and my brother had an ice cream shop… to jar your memory) We took great photos and video with you. You were one of our favorite stops along the road. We posted some of that video on ‘you tube’ so I hope you get a chance to see that. I have a photo of the three of us hanging at the house here. I hope this finds you well and hope your keeping the Spirit of the Mother Road alive with these travelers out there. I’ve covered about 80 per cent of the road now extensively , not just driving it but staying and photographing the places and people, who are just as great and in your case, greater than the sights themselves. Thank You for your dedication and God Bless You Dave, Waterbury CT

  • 9/4/2014 Stopped by the Famous Sinclair Station and had a wonderful talk with Gary. My brother and sister-in-law were with me. Gary advised us after purchasing a picture book that we hold it on our lap as we travel to see if we could find the pictures in the book. It was so much fun, it was like doing a seek ‘n’ find puzzle. Thank you Gary for an experience on Route 66 on our way to Grand Canyon that we had not counted on. The Lord is very good!!!
( Sorry can’t seem to send copy of picture Gary took of us.)

site. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility
issues? A few of my blog audience have complained about
my site not working correctly in Explorer
but looks great in Opera. Do you have any solutions to help fix this issue?

I had the fortune of meeting Gary last week and what a great experience. Such a wealth of knowledge about Route 66 and gave me the experience of how welcoming things must have been traveling the Mother Road. Gary drew a map and explained some of the sights I would see along Route 66, every one I passed along the route I would remember something Gary told me about the place. I will always remember the experience and am already telling people the trip they need to take is on Route 66.

  • Dirk Houben says:

    Howdy Gary,

Hope you remember us, Ania and Ania from Poland, Rienk from Holland and Dirk from Belgium because we will never forget you and your wife. We were the guys on Harleys exploring Route 66 on our own but greatly assisted by Garmin Zumo and River Pilot (without those we would now think the 66 is one long Interstate).
We visited your place on 15th of July 2014 early morning time and we would like to thank you for the nice chat on your porch, the tour of the premises, all the advise, the photo session and the coffee. You helped us a lot in understanding that doing the 66 is not about the miles but all about the people you meet.
Take care, Gary, so that all folks after us can also have this wonderful experience.

PS: I will send the pictures to your e-mail address shortly

  • Kristin & Kelly Proffitt says:

Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. We visited you on July 7, 2014. We appreciate the signed picture of the Sinclair station and the map to Red Oak. We found it and it was so worth the side trip! We stopped at every location along the rest of the route that you suggested and met tons of more interesting people, which is really the highlight and what traveling this road is all about. This was the trip of a lifetime and exceeded our expectations. We have memories that will last our whole lives. Keep up the good work!

  • Terry & Jane Mountjoy-Evans says:

on May 28th 2014 my wife Jane and I had the pleasure of meeting you and experiencing your hospitality (I was the Welsh/UK cop on my retirement trip across R66). I see from visitors photographs that you are still wearing the Gwent police cap badge I gave you when we left. Great! A (treasured) personal gift you gave us was a guardian bell for our motorcycle. Our visit with you is one of our fondest memories of travelling your mother road. You gave us plenty of tips for the trip that lay in front of us. When we return to travel the route we look forward to dropping by and sitting on your porch with you again. I have friends who intend travelling R66. I have told them that they MUST stop to visit you. I will upload a photo or two when I have sorted my images.
Thanks again for your great hospitality.
We look forward to visiting you when we return to the states.
Wishing you good health and a long life.

Thank you so much for the hospitality and the nice conversation while sitting on your bench in front of your store. Time really flew by while talking about the little differences in our countries.

We drove further on Route 66 until we left the mother road at Oklahoma city and headed south for flying home from Dallas, TX.

  • Tom and Doreen says:

Wow!! What a highlight of our Route 66 trip! Gary was the nicest guy ever. He insisted upon our pulling up into his shade and talking “a spell” which we did. Boy, are we glad we took the time to stop and talk. What an interesting guy. He showed us all around his place, and we went back in time. He wouldn’t hear of our paying for the soft drinks he provided. We purchased a couple of T-shirts from him. My husband let me have the one with Gary’s pic on the back of it. 🙂 He gave us several photo opportunities with him and his Sinclair station. We told all of our friends about you, Gary, and some of them plan to make the Route 66 trip. They’ll be looking for you! Keep up the genuine hospitality and have joy in doing it Gary. Your friends, Doreen and Tom , Louisville, Kentucky

Met Gary whilst travelling route 66 on the 17th May 2014 and also happened upon Jerry the author of the EZ guide too so that was a bonus too. • Ray & Angela Ashby says:

We met Gary & his wife when we stopped by at the Sinclair Gay Parita. What a charming guy (hold on to your lady fellas, Gary will whisk them off only to return with them redressed in one of his t-shirts). Gary is a wealth of information and will ensure you know what to make time for on the rest of your journey. Without characters like Gary, Route 66 would be so much poorer. Live long and well Gary.

Ray & Angela from Staines, England

  • Ray & Angela Ashby says:

We visited Gary @ The Sinclair Gay Parita and were joined by a couple from Holland and a couple from Australia. Gary is a mine of information, it is hard to put into words his helpfulness, his knowledge and his outstanding charm but do hold onto your lady fellas, Gary will whisk them away and re-dress them in one of his T-shirts. There is no doubt to us that without the characters like Gary, Route 66 would no be so enthralling. Thanks so much Gary.
    Ray & Angela, Staines, England.
ps. Gary’s friend Dennis @ THe Midpoint Cafe, Adrian, Texas was just as helpful as Gary said he would be.

  • Hey Blue Eyes. Judy and I had the good fortune of stopping by on April 22nd and enjoyed your company with an English and Dutch couple for an hour or two. It is the most memorable time of our trip from Santa Monica to Chicago ( yes we were the Aussie couple who did it in reverse because all the traffic is going the other way). We wish you all the best and many more years of meeting Route 66 travelers and making that day the highlight of their journey along the mother road. Cheers.

Hi Gary–thinking of you while we are watching a friend do a “mural” of our trip on Route 66 in 2009–your autographed picture will be part of the mural–this mural is taking up 3 walls of our powder room–let us know if you want some pictures !!

  • Hi Gary!
It’s sure taken me a while to get to this site; I called in on you way back in March ’13 with my two friends Shelley and Richard. They bought the Route 66 picture book which you kindly signed for them – you reminded Shell of her dad – may he rest in peace – and you showed us around, played us your music and gave us a bottle of Route 66 black cherry cola to refresh us. At the end of our visit a couple of hours later you also gave us a bottle of root beer to take with us. You gave us instructions to buy some ice-cream on Santa Monica Pier and share a root beer float, and you knew that in Australia we call that a Spider! Your driving directions to get us to Red Oak village were impeccable, and I still have the small scrap of paper you scrawled them on! We ate and stayed where you recommended in Carthage, which we loved. We loved the whole trip, and the short time we spent with you were golden moments. Thank you for your welcoming friendliness and humour – see you next time! I hope that once I’ve written this I’ll be able to upload a couple of photo’s. With kind regards and a big hug, Jenni

It was a so marvelous trip from Chicago to LA, from dream to reality for us!

We won’t forget how you welcomed us. You are so nice and so interesting, such as at the TV (we had the opportunity to see you on a French channel two months ago).

Good morning Gary: We are now back home in Canada. We stopped by on our way back towards chicago but you were busy with other people so I just put the fudge I got you on your desk. Our trip would not have been so special had we not met you. Your enthusiasm changed everything for us. We looked a little closer at everything on our journey. The personalized map you drew for us to red Oak ll was great and so we got to spend some time with Lowell in his home. What a privelage. Thank you again and the bottle of black cherry soda is in my cabinet waiting for the icecream. When we open it I will remember those blue eyes just like you said I would. Love Debbie from Canada

We met Gary’ today. Hè is a wise man. We argued about sharing richness by collecting taxes and using it for good education and good healthcare for all inhabitants in our country, The Netherlands. In the USA it’s completely different. We agreed in what’s the good choice. We share the value of friendship and kindness.
Hè gave us good and interesting information about Route66. We enjoyed the gasstation and his collection. But the most Gary’ himself. It was a remarkable and unexpexted meeting with a good guy. We will remember him when we are back in The Netherlands. We feel that we met a friend.

  • Kath and I stopped at the Sinclair Station on June 6, 2013. Gary made our visit very memorable. We were welcomed and had such a nice visit. He was very helpful guiding us on things to see and finding a place to stay overnight. We are from St. Paul, MN. This was my 66 Dream. I have always wanted a 1966 Pontiac GTO since I was 18. I purchased this car in April and decided to drive all of Route 66 in June. Also, my 66th birthday was June 18. The Route 66 road trip was the best time and very memorable. The people along the route were terrific. Gary, you truly made us feel like friends for life. Thank You, Curt

  • Ed Purcell says:

    Hi Gary,

I visited you with my son Justin in October 2012 on our way from Chicago to La, on route 66, we drove the first half by car, and the second half on Harley Davidsons. We spent two hours with you, and enjoyed your hospitality and absorbed your great knowledge of route 66, which helped us further on, as did your book. We also passed on your best wishes as you requested, to Harley and Annabelle in Erick. We were very lucky to get a private audience in Erick, the curiosity shop was closed, but I saw Harley in the street, and we got talking, and I mentioned you. He took a liking to me (cos I play guitar maybe) so he opened the shop, asked us to wait inside, went and got Annabelle, came back and did his musical interlude just for myself, whilst my son filmed it, what a great couple, and needless to say its now on YouTube. I will also send some photos to you of our visit to your garage in Paris Springs when I get a moment. You are a route 66 legend, and I cannot wait to go back sometime.

  • Janet Rogers says:

We only made it to the Grand Canyon before we had to turn back, and I think the best part of our trip were the kind, friendly people we met everywhere we stopped—we’ll never forget them either! We hope to do it again in the next year or two, and we will be sure to stop again. Thank you for such a lovely visit. Trudy Kibby

  • Thank you for making our trip so memorable Gary. When we left Lou Mitchell’s in Chicago we weren’t thrilled with the area and road construction. Once we got to Missouri things improved and our stop at your garage really made it worthwhile. Your hospitality was unbelievable. The pictures of our Vette at the pumps, and of us pointing to the 66 on the roadway will be lasting memories. Hope to do the trip again in the future, maybe with a group from our club, and we’ll be sure to stop and see you.

  • Gary–I enjoyed visiting and talking with you again. Sorry I had to cut it short, but it ended up being a 19 1/2 hour day.

    Hi Gary,
Jamie and I were Jamie’s 30th Birthday trip when we came through in April this year! It was the best trip we’ve been on and I must say that you were one of the nicest people we met on our travels. When we got to Santa Monica pier and asked the guy (Scott I thing his name was. He looked like a blues brother) to sign our book, he’d guessed that we got it from you! We had everyone else sign our book what made an impression on us, so like you say, whenever we look at it, we’ll remember everything and everyone! I will send some photo’s over to you for your album. We’ve told everyone about you, and have said that to them all that if they ever want to get thier kicks on Route 66, they need to drop by and see you!

    Take Care,

    Sonia & Jamie, Kent, UK

Hi Gary. It was nice to meet you (Sept 15th)and enjoy your enthusiasm for the Mother Road. We visited all the locations you told us about …but missed the steak house because we got there on a Monday …the only day of the week that they are closed. Too bad ’cause you had my mouth watering for that juicy steak.

We stopped to visit Angel but he wasn’t in the store the morning we arrived, but we talked with his daughter, told her me had a visit with you and passed along our best wishes and headed on done the road. We also made a point of stopping at the Santa Monica Pier and let them know we had met you

We sure enjoyed the Route 66 drinks, the bottles are now part of our Rt 66 collection/display.

Our trip out and back was 6000 miles, the old 1980 Vette was ready for a rest and a good cleaning.

    Take care

What a delight to meet Gary and tour his historic Sinclair Service Station. We were greeted as long time friends and given Rt 66 pop. Gary encouraged us to take pictures and even made suggestions as to good photo ops. I wish we could have spent a lot more time visiting with him and his station. We took his advise, changed our plans and stayed at the Best Budget Inn. We also went to Red Oak II on Sat evening at the church for music and went back the next day for a walk about of the grounds. People like Gary made this a rememberable and remarkable road trip we will not forget. Gary went on how much he liked my red Dodge Challenger.

    Hi Gary!

I visited you on June, 28th on my trip Route 66 west from Chicago to Santa Monica. Finally I did it and it was great. All the adventures on the Mother Road! We ate some ice and smoked together some cigarettes. I am an engineer and have a son, 5 years old. I got divorced. We talked about that, remeber? Your place is great, the old station and all that stuff from old Route 66! We both sat behind in the shadow and you told me to put my car also there. There was a big heat that day and we had a great afternoon together. It was one of the best experiences I got on 66. I visited also Lowell and Rose on Red Oak II. They served me a meal in the evening and finally I spent the night in an old country house (the blue one). That was so great there! I loved to be with you and at Red Oak II. The whole trip was really the Dream Of My Life Tour! And you were a part of it! Thanks again for the awesome afternoon! Take care!

    Bye Bye, Yours, Jochen.

As a Route 66 afictionado & Founder of the Canadian Society, my mission is to save the Mother Road beyond borders. Congratulations on your steadfast dedication and stewardship in the rebirth of the Gay Parita Sinclair Station that graces the Mother Road in Missouri. I’ll have a lot of stories (and pictures) to share with my 1st graders when school starts again. Thanks again for the memories.

  • David & Linda Shedrow says:

Gary, we had a wonderful time visiting with you and your wife on your front porch on May 22, 2011. That was one of the highlights of our trip. We weren’t able to reach California due to illness but will complete the trip at a later date. The books you showed us were awesome and we needed them to complete our trip. We used them every step of the way or we would have missed a great deal. When we arrived in Vegas to see our son, we gave him the picture you signed for them and he loved it; they will be coming by to see you in a couple of years. By the grace of God we missed the Joplin tornado by 20 minutes. Our hearts go out to the people of Joplin. We hope you faired well. Everyone liked the hats we bought from you and we need more. Your gas station was a delight of days gone by and have told everyone they must stop. Thank you for the memories and will be back again.

We gave our son the picture you signed for him and he absolutely loved it. He will be by one of these years to see you. Thank you for showing us the books we needed to get the rest of the way to California. They were a life saver; we used them every step of the way. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the end of the road but ended up staying in Vegas with our son due to illness. But we will be back again and make it the rest of the way to California. God was with us and we missed the Joplin tornado by 20 minutes. Our hearts go out to them. The hats we bought from you everyone likes and made wonderful gifts. Thank you again and we will be back again very soon.

Stopped by yesterday to see the station. Funny thing: there are great big photos of the station hanging in the cafeteria at the TeleTech call center in Springfield, Missouri where I work (in keeping with the ""Route 66"" theme of the building’s interior decor). It was only after I googled on the place and found it that I realized I’d already driven right past it twice, on the way to Carthage, without even noticing it. To make matters worse, I’d even taken a photo of that stretch of road with that very station peeking out from behind the trees and STILL hadn’t noticed it! It was fascinating to get to see it in person at last. Everybody was very friendly, and I’m certainly going to come back next time I pass by that way.

Gary, After our wonderful stop at your gas station in the early spring of this year (2009) and the purchase of the books that you offered – ""Images of 66"" (book one) by David Wickline and the ""EZ 66 Guide"" by Jerry McClanahan – Robin and I planed our trip West on Route 66 for over six months. You set the goal for us to meet everyone (business owners – supports) of the road. With our stop to see you on November 16th, 2009 after our three (3) weeks on the road out West our trip for this year was complete. Everyone that we wanted to see and talk to were waiting for us at every stop all along the way. We had all business owners sign our book ""Images"" on the picture of their business – talking to them made the trip so special. I even had my hair cut by Angel Delgadillo in Seligman, Az. By the way – We liked and purchased your new 2010 t-shirts, plus one of the 2009 t-shirt. You need a t-shirt with the picture of your gas station on it, the people will purchase it… Thanks again for making our trip the BEST you are the GREATEST.

Gary – After months and months of planning our trip on the Mother Road our trip took a new direction and meaning after our visit with you on 14 Sep 2009. You showed us how to read, understand and maneuver through Jerry McClanahan’s book ""EZ 66 Guide for Travelers"". It made the rest of our trip to LA easier and we saw a lot more than we had originally planned. The donut and coffee we shared with you hit the spot but our conversation with you was priceless. You are exactly the kind of folks we were hoping to meet along the Route and especially in Missouri . As you suggested we stopped at Red Oaks and that was the second best experience of the day. We met Lowell Davis and he gave us a tour of his home. We sat with him on his front porch and we chatted for almost an hour. Thank you for making our Route 66 trip so rememberable. Friends for life.

  • Dave and Nani says:

Gary, it was a wonderful experience meeting you and your wife. Having taken vacations as a child down Route 66 from Oklahoma to California in the late 50s to early 60s, I have long felt to urge to return and explore this great old road and its history. Over the last few years I have introduced the history and allure of ""The Mother Road"" to my wife and she has really taken to the adventure of the ""road trip"". Meeting you and seeing all that you have to offer those passing through is really special. Your beautifully done Sinclair station helps to give an appreciation of a time long past – a time that was more simple but hard by todays standards. One of the most memorable moments on this trip was sitting with you in that old garage and having a soda. Thank you for all of the information and your hospitality. We will stop by again on our next adventure!

  • John Lamper says:

After Traveling the Route from Chicago to Texas/New Mexico State line From July 11th-18th. The most memorable person we met was Gary Turner. Thanks for the cold soda on a hot day, and the stories! take care and keep the mother road alive!

Dear Gary, It was just lovely to meet you and listen to all the interesting histories about Route 66. Again, I will always be deeply grateful about the book you gave me, I promise you I will give it away only for one reason: the charity action, otherwise it will remain with me. As promised I herewith attach you the article of newspaper where the ROUTE 66 PROJECT is explained, as well as the picture taken with you and Xavier. I will also attach the link to the daily video we posted and also the newsletter we daily send to our fans. • Brenda says:

Rural Missouri Cover This article brought me back to my childhood. My Dad was a Sinclair oil distributor. He had roughly 6 or 7 stations he would deliver gas to and me being the tom-boy of the family would tag along any chance I got. I remember the gas wars and handing out the S&H green stamps to the cars at the pump. Each station held a certain ""treat"" everytime I came with Dad, one owner kept a roll of nickles in a cigar box for me to play the pin ball machine while Dad unloaded the gas, yep you could still play 5 balls for a nickle. My Dad passed away in 1998 but I kept many of the items that I could not part with. I have his silver ash tray that has Dino in the middle with the Sinclair logo below and many of the patches he wore on his shirt, I still have from my childhood the transistor radio that looks like a gas pump and the plastic Dino piggy bank. We had an auction when Mom passed away and put Sinclair items out at auction mainly to clean out the house but brought hundreds of dollars from Sinclair collectors, we actually made more money on the Sinclair items than we did the rest of the auction, guess Dad was still looking out after us kids…….. The picture on page 3 really makes me blink, I know those hats and have many of those logos on the shirt, seems like our back porch was always painted Sinclair green. Anyway thanks for the wonderful trip down memory lane…..and the stop at the gas station along the way.
